Anabezi is a 20-bed camp located on the banks of the Zambezi River at the Lower end of the Lower Zambezi National Park (LZNP) in Zambia.

The name Anabezi is derived from the camp being situated on the Zambezi River and the many Ana Trees or Winter Thorns (Faidherbia albida) that surround the camp. Lebala means ‘wide open spaces’ in Setswana and vast plains with scattered palms and tree islands backed by wooded savannahs dominate the scenery. This wild expanse contrasts with the casual understated elegance and luxury of the camp itself.

Lebala is situated in the south of the Kwando concession, adjacent to the headwaters of the Linyanti marshes that form the boundary between Botswana and Namibia. The southerly flowing Kwando River disappears into the vast marshland before emerging as the Linyanti River. The triangle formed by this vast wetland is home to the Mamili National Park in Namibia.

Set amongst vast plains scattered with Illala Palms, Lebala Camp offers superb wildlife sightings with elephant, hippo, giraffe, lion and buffalo all plentiful. Spotlights switched on at night give guests a glimpse of elusive nocturnal species, including leopard. A staff of 22 caters to the guests’ needs, and Lebala Camp has a swimming pool and a game viewing hide on site.

The wetlands and flood plains around Lebala offer a wonderful variety of wildlife with excellent sightings of elephant, hippo, lechwe, zebra, giraffe, impala, wildebeest, kudu, tsessebe, roan, sable, buffalo and the ever present predators; wild dog, lion, cheetah and hyena. After dark, spotlights are switched on and the game drives expose our guests to nocturnal sightings of rare and elusive species such as, leopard, Selous Mongoose, small spotted genet, and aardwolf, to name a few. Nocturnal bird species that are encountered include Natal Nightjar, Pennantwinged Nightjar and a large variety of owls.

This special ecosystem is home to a wide variety of Africa’s plains game such as zebra, wildebeest, impala, giraffe and tsessebe and also provides refuge to lechwe, waterbuck and the shy sitatunga.

Lebala has a staff complement of 22 to cater to guests. The camp balances understated elegance with untamed Africa to perfection.

Set in the middle of the Zambezi River, Tsika Island is approximately 30 - 35 km upstream from Chongwe between Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe and the village of Mugurameno in Zambia. The Camp is situated on the South side of the island, which has a mixture of Albida groves and reeded channels, with a sandy plain to the North.

 

Tsika Island was purpose built to offer guests an exclusive bush camp experience with the option of a canoe safari along the lower Zambezi to either Kasaka River Lodge or Chongwe River Camp.

The camp features just 3 rustic chalets allowing a maximum of 7 guests. With no predators on the island, the buildings feature open ferro structures under village thatch to complement the island bush experience, with coco poles securing the windows and beds set under full walk in mosquito nets.

The en-suite bathrooms are fully private with hot and cold running water. The dining space is built to the same open design offering a large covered room with local village artifacts decorating the bar. And of course no bush camp experience would be complete without the traditional campfire and comfortable lounge chairs out front!

Tsika Island is a true partnership with the nearby village, which retains ownership of the island. Chongwe Safaris, as well as leasing the island from the Village, gives $50 per bed night back to the community. For this reason, in addition to the other activities’, we also encourage Tsika guests to visit Chiawa Cultural Village and Mugurameno Village and School during their stay to learn more of the local Goba people.

Mahale’sgreen season runs from November through to March and this time of year is a photographers dream; the haze often prevalent through the dry season is washed away. The forest offers varied viewing, although the forest is at its best, full of the colour of wildflowers, birds and butterflies. The lake is clearest in these months with incredible views of the Congo in the distance.

 Famous for containing some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in Africa, the Mahale Mountains National Park was gazetted in 1985, covers an area of 1 613 km² and is located about 128 km south of Kigoma town on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The western boundary of the park protects an adjacent 1.6 km wide strip of Lake Tanganyika’s waters.

The land in and around Mahale is the traditional homeland of the Watongwe and Waholoholo tribes. Japanese primate researchers began exploring along the shore of Lake Tanganyika, south of Kigoma as early as 1961. In 1965, the researchers established their first camp, ‘Kansyana’, in Mahale and began habituating chimpanzees.

The terrain is mostly rugged and hilly, and is dominated by the Mahale Mountains chain that runs from the northwest to the southeast across the park. The highest peak (Mount Nkungwe) rises to 2 462 m above sea level.

Tourist Attractions

Mahale offers a number of outstanding attractions for visitors, from tracking wild habituated chimpanzees, to mountain climbing, snorkelling, fishing, kayaking and relaxing on deserted, pristine, white, sandy beaches.

• Walking safaris in the beautiful, lowland forest allow close encounters with a vast array of birds and animals,
• An ascent of the highest peak in the Mahale Mountains ridge, Mt. Nkungwe, is one of the most spectacular activities available to tourists.
• Lake Tanganyika contains more than 250 species of fish found nowhere else on Earth,
• Long walking trips can be arranged for viewing big game such as lion, elephant, hippo, buffalo, giraffe and leopard. These safaris may require up to 7 days.
• Sport fishing on the fresh waters of Lake Tanganyika is possible under special licences available to visitors.
• Cultural tourism activities entailing visits to the nearby villages can also be arranged. Kigoma town and the historical town Ujiji are worth a detour.
• Other tourist destinations in western Tanzania that can complement a visit to Mahale Mountains National Park include Gombe Stream and Katavi National Parks,

“Mahale isn’t just about chimps, although we appreciate they like to take centre stage. There’s also forest walks, kayaking, swimming, fishing, and sailing down the shoreline with sundowners and fresh sashimi.”

The dry season in Mahale starts in June, when the long rains have stopped, and goes through to October. At this time of year the temperatures increase and the skies are quite hazy, the lake has never been more appealing for a cooling dip. As the dry season progresses, the chimps are more usually found in the lower slopes due to their favourite fruits being found lower down.

LUXURY TENTED CAMPS 

Safari novices are sometimes surprised when they find that something called a "tented camp" has been booked for them, even though they are spending good money on their vacation.

Don't be fooled. Tented camps are the ultimate safari luxury. They are similar to lodges in conception, except that sleeping is not in cabins or bungalows, but in full-fledged fixed wooden-poled, walk-in canvas tents recreating the luxury hunting safaris of the good old great white hunters. Tents have a bedroom, a full bathroom and sometimes even a lounge. Better than tents, they are actually canvas chalets. Most are permanent, but some are assembled only for the high season.

Many of them offer full hotel service, while others are more on the rustic side with bucket showers and no electricity. Here you pay for exclusivity, privacy, and nearly for your (temporary) own piece of Africa. There is a range of categories and prices, but some of the most luxurious accommodations in Southern Africa are tented camps.
